In what sizes are your virtual double-matted images available?
Not all our images are available in all our sizes. Currently the sizes we offer are (in inches) 5x7; 8x10; 11x14; 16x20; 20x30; 24x30; 30x40; and panorama sizes 15x30 and 25x40. Sizes refer to image INCLUDING its double mat. Mat sizes can vary by a tiny bit depending upon the particular image, but generally – almost always – a 5x7 or 8x10 includes a 1 inch double mat surrounding the image; an 11x14, 16x20, 20x30 and 24x30 includes a 2 ½ inch double mat surrounding the image; and a 30x40 and the panoramic sizes 15x30 and 25x40 include a 5 inch double mat surrounding the image.
"Why do you use an off-white color for the top mat on all images?
Because the professional artists and professional decorators with whom we consulted advise us that it gives photographic art images their best look -- consistently. Ever notice that just about all the photographic art works that you see in high-end galleries feature an off-white top mat?
How do you pick the bottom mat color?
For each image, Ambassador Eckert and Michael Kessler, President of Kessler Color, one of the country’s premier professional photography services, discuss and agree upon which particular color within the image to pick out for the bottom mat color. It is not just an approximation – it’s an exact match. And, by the way, again upon the advice of artists and decorators we’ve consulted, we take care not to make the common mistake of making the bottom color mat too large, a common cause of ruining the classy look of images and paintings.
But what if I want a different color mat than off-white?
Then we’ll do it for you – for a price. We charge $50 extra to prepare a PDF of what the image would look like in the top and bottom mat colors you describe. If you approve the look you see in the PDF we then do it your way. Contact us by email
What do you say about the fact that so many others selling photographic art claim that the reason they do not mat their images is that this is a highly personal decision that they leave to the customer?
What we say is: Baloney! It cost more and requires more effort to do it the way we do. Most others just print the image -- period. And often they do it on low-tech equipment. Then they roll it and stick it in a cylinder and drop it in the mail – not good. We don’t – and you shouldn’t -- buy the pretense that this is done for your benefit.
